Scientists still don’t have a definitive answer to whether or not period-syncing is a real thing – despite all the anecdotal evidence and women proclaiming that yes, it happens, and it’s a pretty rubbish experience when you’re in a houseshare.

This is mostly because no one’s entirely sure how it works. How do our bodies work out when other women nearby are on their periods? Why do some women seem to experience this phenomenon while others don’t?

But one thing we may be a little closer to understanding is why periods would sync up.

A new theory proposes that period-syncing happens so that women will all become sexually receptive and fertile at the same time.

The reason we’d want this to happen? It’s down to living in packs.

The theory proposes that in the animal kingdom, female animals would sync up so they wouldn’t be the only one being used for reproductive purposes by the dominant male.

Instead, the male would be able to spread the love, attempt to procreate with all the females in the same fertile time period, and no one female would have to deal with constant attacks.

The process is called ‘socially mediated synchrony’, and it’s essentially a way for all the females in the pack to protect each other from being the main focus of the dominant male. A problem shared is a problem halved, right?

Of course this is just one theory that may apply to the animal kingdom. There’s not yet any evidence that the same learned behaviour applies to humans – although wouldn’t it be nice if our periods syncing up were just a way for our bodies to make sure we’re all in this together?
