There aren’t many people who’d be able to fit into their clothes from a decade ago, let alone after half a century.
But one svelte couple have donned their wedding outfits from 1966 to wear to their golden wedding anniversary.
Carole-Ann and Jim Stanfield were shocked to find that their wedding outfits still fitted, after their granddaughter Hayley visited and wanted to look through family photos.
Jim, who’s now 71, went into the loft for the purpose of finding family photo albums, and instead came across Carole-Ann’s dress gathering dust.
They last wore them on October 1 1966.
‘When Hayley discovered we still had our wedding outfits, she said we should try them on to see if they still fit,’ says Carole-Ann.
‘Jim went up and dug them out. Hayley insisted we put them on but I said no, they’d been in the loft and they were dusty and smelly.
‘But she begged and pleaded so we did it for her – we were gobsmacked when we discovered they still fitted perfectly.’
And it was Hayley’s idea to throw a party to which the couple could wear their outfits.
‘A lot of people knew we were going to wear them, but they were still stunned to see us in them.’
The pair, who visited Malta in 1966, are now planning to ‘honeymoon’ once more in Turkey.
They originally met at the men’s club where Jim worked in 1962 and have been together ever since.
Their secret to having such a long marriage?
Plenty of laughter.
‘Jim loved my big blonde hair, and I loved his humour – he is such a comedian and always makes me laugh. I think that’s the key,’ Carole-Ann says.
‘We have very different interests and hobbies, but the laughter is what keeps us strong.’
Jim even adapted their wedding rings to celebrate the milestone by adding two hearts made out of gold that he found with his metal detector.
‘It’s incredible to think this gold has been in the ground for thousands of years, but I was able to find it and use it on our wedding rings.’
