A tiny animal is believed to be the world’s smallest donkey.

American donkey Ottie is just 16 inches tall at eight months old – nine inches shorter than the current Guinness World Record holder.

The miniatures donkey lives with his owner Cheryl Griffiths, 48, at her home in Sawtry, Cambridgeshire.

Although he is fully grown, he’s unable to take the official title until he is a year old.

His owner says he makes a great pet and is small enough to walk around her house.

Cheryl compares him to a guard dog because he ‘always knows when someone is nearby’.

At present, the smallest donkey in the Guinness Book of Records is 10-year-old KneeHi, a brown jack who measured 25.29 inches at Best Friends Farm in Gainesville, Florida, USA, on 26 July 2011.

Cheryl said Ottie won’t be growing anymore as ‘donkeys do 90% of their growing in the first year’.

Although the miniature is joined by Cheryl’s 12 miniature horses, she’s hoping to find a female companion for the white jack.

She said: ‘I’m hoping to find Ottie a girlfriend so he isn’t lonely and also so he can breed and others can have a pet.

‘But he’s too young at the moment and we can’t do anything until he’s three years old.

Cheryl’s fascination with miniatures began when she had an accident: ‘I have been into horses all my life but then I got a back injury so I could not ride them any more.’

‘With miniatures, you can do all the same things but without riding them.

‘It’s brilliant, they can do shows and competitions like dressage and agility. It’s like an obstacle course where you run alongside them.”

Cheryl says once he reaches maturity, she will be there to accompany him to competitions, fêtes and pet shows.

Cheryl added: ‘Ottie will be part of the agility team, he moves very well but he will need training.

‘I also want to take him to fêtes and pet shows so people can come and see him.’

Cheryl says miniatures are not too different to horses or donkeys: ‘They just don’t have as much food and need to exercise a lot.’

‘It also gets me out running with them and keeps me fit too. I love it.’

But it may not be long till Ottie gets his accolade.

A spokesperson for Guinness World Records said: ‘As Little Ottie is nine months old, then unfortunately he would not qualify for the title yet as our guidelines state that the donkey must be at least a year old.

‘However we would love to hear from his owner in March next year.’

We’ll be waiting with bated breath.
