A Car Pool Karaoke session ended on a memorable note for Sam Smith after he was surprised by American girl-group Fifth Harmony on Wednesday afternoon.

The singer, who is gearing up for the release of second studio album The Thrill of it All, became the latest celebrity to join James Corden for the recurring segment on his hugely popular US programme, The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Interspersing a series of duets with relaxed conversation about subjects including his diet, meeting Hollywood star Ryan Gosling, potential wedding plans and the emotional impact Smith’s music has had on huge fan Corden, the singer, 25, admitted his favourite song is Fifth Harmony hit Work from Home.

Discussing the 2016 single, a collaboration with rapper Ty Dolla Sign, and his general love of the band, he said: ‘When I hear them I feel free, I feel alive, I feel like the woman in me is on fire.

‘Work from Home, I listen to it every time before I go out. I think it’s my wedding song – I want to walk down the aisle to it in heels. I’d love it if I got Fifth Harmony at my wedding, and my husband was there waiting for me.’

But Sam was left stunned after the pop group, comprised of band-members Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane and Lauren Jauregui, jumped into the backseat of Corden’s car for a pre-arranged surprise after he pulled to the kerb.

Clearly delighted, the British star – who admitted he was ‘shaking’ after coming face to face with his favourite group – joined them from an impromptu rendition of the track.

Smith had previously thanked Corden for championing his music, specifically ballad Lay Me Down, which the presenter raved about on Twitter after hearing it while the then unknown singer was still working in a bar.

‘I didn’t know you were working in a bar,’ said a visibly surprised Corden.’But I heard this song and I just remember thinking I’ve just heard a song I’ll listen to for the rest of my life.’

Corden’s latest Carpool Karaoke appearance comes after he admitted he was given a coffee enema at a Los Angeles clinic.

The presenter has revealed he was left squirming after being convinced by his pregnant wife Julia to undergo the bizarre treatment, which started with the presenter receiving a massage and then being offered a coffee.

He told the Daily Star: ‘I went into this treatment room. They poured oils on my head which was amazing. Then gave me a massage, which was incredible.

‘Then they said, “right it is time for you to have a coffee”. I was like, “great, I am an almond milk guy”. But they were like, “no, no, we are going to pour five cups of coffee in your a**.”‘

The treatment is supposed to boost immunity and increase energy – but James said he didn’t feel any of the supposed health benefits of the unusual process.

Asked what he made of the surreal experience, James added: ‘Not great. I will be honest. I have had better coffees.’
