Most people use Facebook to keep in touch with their family and friends.

Others use it to connect with strangers who share the same name as them.

Like 19-year-old Tasmanian Sam Mitchell, who decided to make it his mission to find another Sam Mitchell. As luck would have it it, he did. He came across 22-year-old Sam James Mitchell, from London, and went on to send him a message.

‘You may be wondering why I have sent you a friend request. I had to because we share the same name. Middle name as well. Good day sir,’ Sam wrote.

Sam James swiftly responded: ‘Yeah, and what is stranger is that I’ve just moved from the UK to Australia.’

After joking around for a while, Sam’s brother suggested flying Sam James to their hometown for their New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Four hours into their messaging, and Sam James was on a plane to Launceston – however no one was particularly sure as to whether the situation was the ‘real deal’.

‘We weren’t sure what to think of each other. It wasn’t until 20-odd minutes after we picked Sam up we realised we were going to get along just fine… made the next few days a bit more fun,’ Sam told Daily Mail Australia.

The pair mostly bonded over beer – and went on to drink a lot of it as they spent New Year’s Eve together.

When asked what they had in common, the immediate response was ‘beer’.

They also played lots of drinking games – including competing against each other in a ‘bucket race’, which saw the pair hopping around in buckets to reach the finish line. They also played plenty of beer pong, of course.

‘[We] drank a few beers and got ready for New Year’s Eve out on the town. And at midnight under the fireworks shared a kiss,’ Sam said.

‘We’d joked about it. And when the fireworks hit. We both felt deep down in our hearts, it was the right thing to do..

‘It was lengthy enough for our mate to take a photo. Let’s leave it at that… Can’t give too much away. We’ll have nothing left to write in our romantic novel.’

Ever since first meeting, Sam and Sam James have remained truly close. Sam James is even working on getting a holiday visa, and is currently looking for a job in Melbourne.

Let’s hope the the pair can get back to one another as soon as possible.
