Celebrity Big Brother‘s India Willoughby was left furious after Amanda Barrie called her a man and then laughed – joking that she did it ’cause she fancies her’.

The journalist, who had a full gender reassignment surgery in 2015 and identifies as a woman, was left shocked when the Coronation Street star referred to her twice as ‘he’.

She said she took ‘great offence’ to the veteran actress’ comments and later refused to accept the 82-year-old’s apology, in scenes set to air on Friday night.

India, who has already been misgendered by Rachel Johnson and Ann Widdecombe in the house, was not impressed with the slip.

It came as the group were talking about how they’ve all had the cough, when Amanda pointed at India and said: ‘He hasn’t had it!’

India looked shocked and corrected with emphasis: ‘She!’

Amanda laughed and replied: ‘Why do I do that? It’s ’cause I fancy you!’

But the BBC broadcaster seemed unimpressed by the joke and said: ‘That’s twice you’ve misgendered me. Amanda – that’s the second time she’s misgendered me and she’s just chuckled.’

Amanda said: ‘I do apologise deeply,’ but India continued: ‘Well, an apology is not enough because I’m sorry, but I did explain to you how important it was and that’s twice you’ve done it.’

She added furiously: ‘You certainly don’t misgender someone and then have a chuckle’

Former MP Ann, 70, who has misgendered India herself, chimed in: ‘India – if it’s not deliberate, an apology is always enough.’

India replied: ‘Let me tell you Ann, only I know how I feel. You don’t know how I feel inside.’

Turning back to Amanda, she said: ‘Amanda can you as the person concerned… I take great offence to that.’

Later, while India sat in the garden, Amanda came over to apologise, beginning with a tentative ‘darling…’ – but was told: ‘I don’t want to talk about it Amanda.’

The Benidorm actress carried on firmly: ‘I’ve come to apologise for a stupid slip. You know very well that was not intentionally hurtful – I’m very fond of you, I like you very much. I can do no more than apologise

‘But if you don’t want to take the apology that is up to you. I am the least likely person ever to be prejudiced or anything against anyone and anybody who knows me knows that.’

As India stared on in silence, Amanda added: ‘If you want to take it that I did a terrible, terrible, terribly hurtful thing to you… I truly, honestly, on my bended knee did not. I’m 82 and I made a mistake, I’m very sorry. Goodnight.’

It comes after viewers were divided on Thursday as India was shown drying her hair topless, without any censoring.

Fans were split in their views, with some claiming show bosses were objectifying the newsreader by not blurring her chest as she is transgender, yet others claimed India knew what she was doing by being openly topless.

During the episode, the camera panned to the newsreader sitting topless with no explanation, leaving viewers baffled.

Some viewers claimed India was aware of her actions, tweeting: ‘Why did #cbb feel the need to show India topless? Surely it should of been censored. India knows exactly what she’s doing, she knows what show she’s on and knows that if she’s sat topless in the bathroom it will be shown on tv.

‘I don’t know why India has to do her hair topless? She knows everyone can see her. ‘; ‘Is India just sitting drying her hair with her boobs out  #cbbuk’; ‘Am I the only person who just saw India with her boobs casually out?!  #CBB #CBBIndia’

Others claimed there was a double standard, as they wondered if any of the other housemates would be defended if they stripped off.

Fans tweeted: ‘I think it’s great India can be comfortable in her own skin, but if any of the other Women were to get their breasts out it would be frowned upon! Inappropriate? @bbuk’

‘If Jess [Impiazzi] had sat there with her boobs out everyone would be calling her a s**t India does it its a celebration #CelebrityBigBrother #cbb’.

Another point of view was that CBB bosses had been unfair in showing the scenes, as they reasoned: ‘Hold on a sec. I wonder if Big Brotehr would have had the nerve to show the naked breasts of any other celebrities in the house other than India? #cbb #celebritybigbrother #celebritybigbrotheruk’

‘Really don’t get where big brother are going this year with this whole woman feminism s**t?When on earth has it been ok so focus on a woman blow drying her with her boobs out, just because India is a transgender it doesn’t make it ok for her to be nude? Completely confused @bbuk’

‘#CBB why did India feel the need to dry her hair without a bra on. No need – there’s more to women than getting boobs out. I thought that this programme was going to show more depth. Just more attention seeking…

‘I noticed they showed India sat topless would the same be done to one of the other ladies? Or is it that she doesn’t mind ?? @bbuk #CBBUK’

Elsewhere in the episode, India and Ann Widdecombe clashed again when the former politician referred to the transgender newsreader as a ‘he’.

And while gender has been discussed countless times in the house over the past three days, the latest conversation has seen India and Ann come to a meeting of the minds.

Alone in the living room, in scenes that are yet to air on the main show, the pair were talking about men.

'People will fizz with fury when they hear you say that!' Elsewhere in the episode, India debated gender again with Ann Widdecombe... but they ended up agreeing and hugging it out

‘Men get a bad rap!’ India – who herself was a man until 2015 – declared. ‘I’m a bit fed up in here listening to some of the conversations. There are plenty of good guys in this world.’

Ann chimed in: ‘Loads and loads.’ India went on: ‘You cant say one gender behaves in a particular way. That’s ridiculous nonsense.

Ann pointed out that men have ‘certain characteristics’ and India added that people ‘shouldn’t stereotype’.

‘In many ways the world has swung too far to the feminist side and people are nervous about taking on women,’ India mused.

Ann went on: ‘I think gender and the differences between the genders are biological facts and I think that boys do go for the engines and the girls go for the dolls. And I don’t see anything wrong with that.’

India then said: ‘There will be people at home fizzing with fury when they hear that.’

‘Oh they will be throwing things at the screen!’ Ann agreed.

‘But I think you’re bang on, I’m going to give you a hug,’ India said, walking over to Ann and embracing her. ‘Even if some think you’re a stuffy stick in the mud.’

Viewers of the show had previously slammed her for being ‘rude’ and branded Ann’s mis-gendering as ‘absolutely awful’.

Ann’s slip-up regarding India’s gender came about while the housemates were sat round in the living area discussing how they were given their name by their parents and India had joked that she was ‘named after her mother’s favourite takeaway – Indian.’

As the housemates quizzed her, Ann remarked: ‘I think he is pulling your leg.’

India was quick to correct her, as she hit back: ‘He! She?!,’ prompting Ann to quickly apologise, as she said: ‘Oh I beg your pardon.’

Her mistake didn’t go unnoticed by viewers at home, as they rushed to Twitter to criticise Ann, with many claiming the former MP had mis-gendered India ‘on purpose’.

They penned: ‘Ann misgendered India on purpose! There is no man in the room and if India hasn’t told everyone she was trans* would Ann have made the comment? NO. Have a word #CBB!

‘The fact that Ann keeps calling India “he” is so rude!! Really bugging me.

‘After Ann’s constant moaning since the second she walked in & miss-gendering India (which personally I think was on purpose, you can’t mistake ‘he’ when there’s no men in the house) I can’t see how people can favour her and call her a legend.

‘Cannot believe Ann called India a he. How absolutely awful of her @bbuk.

‘Seeing as Ann didn’t know India before her transition there was absolutely no need for her to misgender her. Had she known her before her transition perhaps a mistake could happen. That was no mistake.’ (sic)

As well as her transition, India had opened up about her relationships and claimed she hasn’t dated in 20 years while discussing romance with Ashley and Jess. While Ashley admitted to being single since 2014, India responded: ‘I’m terrified of having a relationship, I don’t want to get hurt. I would like it to happen, but I haven’t dated anyone in 20 years.’

‘I’ve never actually been with a man,’ she confessed. ‘It’s the fear of the unknown… I’m not attracted to women.’

India also revealed that she is currently not speaking to her son, after giving him some space to come to terms with her transition. She explained: ‘We haven’t had a row, I told him when I was 16 and he was great and said it didn’t bother him, but it did change things and there’s this invisible barrier.

‘Him calling me dad is going to seem odd, but now at this point, it’s definitely time to give him that space.’
