One animal shelter has come up with a brilliant initiative to getting their pup-residents adopted – by sorting them into houses, a la Harry Potter.

Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando has introduced ‘Pawgwarts’ to their shelter, with their highly trained staff sorting the dogs into houses.

The shelter feels it’s a ‘fun way of presenting’ their available dogs – while also encouraging those interested to look further into the pups’ personalities, as opposed to their cuteness.

The idea came from scientific research that has proven that visual identification of dog breeds is incorrect more than 70% of the time, and having joined many progressive shelters around the USA in removing breed labels from their shelter, the Pet Alliance is going one step further with Pawgwarts.

According to Pet Alliance, Pawgwarts will help dog-lovers adopt their breed based on personality.

The website reads: ‘We decided to highlight their individual behaviours and personalities. Throughout the Harry Potter series, students were placed into the house based on the sorting hat. Each housemate possesses certain core values intrinsic to that house.

‘Since the only sorting hat available is within the walls of Hogwarts, our crack team of wizards and a few muggles, created a series of activities to allow a dog to be sorted by personality.’

While for many Harry Potter fans, being able to tell whether you’re a Hufflepuff or a Slytherin is easy. But seeing as dogs all share the same loving nature, it can be tricky.

And so, Pet Alliance has split the houses into four categories: Knowledge, Ambition, Friendliness and Bravery.

For instance, a dog who takes to learning obedience cues or quickly figures out a puzzle has the knowledge of a Ravenclaw.

A small dog who has the determination to climb the agility A-Frame possesses the ambition of Slytherin house.

All affectionate ‘happy-to-know-you’ pups who embody friendliness will be sorted into Hufflepuff, and a dog who embraces change and new things has the bravery known to all Gryffindors.

Of course, the sorting doesn’t stop there – as dog-lovers will actually have a house allocated to them, too.

The Pet Alliance has created a quiz for all of those wanting to adopt a dog from their shelter, in which asks questions such as: ‘Where is your dog when you get back from Pawgwarts?’ and ‘What distracts your dog most on walks?’ and gives you a selection of answers to choose from.

At the end of the quiz, you’ll be able to see which house your desired dog belongs to. If you’d like to take the quiz, even just to see which house your own dog belongs to, you can do so here.

It’s a brilliant way for those interested in adopting a dog to find out more about their furry friend before bringing him or her home – and hopefully it’ll prevent the heartbreaking scenario of bringing a dog back to a shelter after re-homing.

Alongside their new Harry Potter initiative, the animal shelter is looking for donations so that all of the Pawgwarts pups can have basic vaccines and care provided for them. You can donate here.
