Far from the latest craze, these little creatures are incredible.
African pygmy hedgehogs require a modest budget and a fair amount of care to ensure they stay well.
Provided with the correct care, they will provide, in spades, the cutest photos and many hours of fun and snuggles.
I have an African pygmy hedgehog called Nutmeg.
She’s incredibly shy but she’s the cutest little thing and loves cuddles.
Here’s 8 things you only know if you own an African pygmy hedgehog.
1. What poo boots are
You frequently talk about them on your favourite Facebook group.
APHs need to run at night, they can run up to nine miles.
For some reason, as they run, they poo – not a problem in the wild but when in a wheel, you guessed it, they run in their poo and it gathers in their feet. Mmm, nice!
2. Each hedgehog has its own personality
Similar to cats and dogs, APHs have unique characters.
You’re not going to train them on a lead or take them for walks but they will respond to their owner’s voice and will definitely show characteristics such as being more bold or shy, adventurous or lazy.
3. Hibernation is a bad sign
Unlike their European cousins, APHs cannot hibernate due to their small size.
If they’re showing signs of trying to hibernate (slowing down, not waking up), they must be warmed up to ensure they do not hibernate as they do not have enough fat reserves and would die.
4. Stoking them is incredibly therapeutic
When they’re relaxed they will lay their spines down.
They are then actually very soft and they will thoroughly enjoy being stroked.
They will even snuggle in for a cuddle and their tummies are incredibly silky.
Nutmeg’s likes to hide her nose in my armpit or she climbs up and hides in my hair!
5. Quill pain
The only thing worse than treading on lego in your bare feet? Treading on a hedgehog quill.
Love for your prickly friend will enable you to handle live worms.
I thought I’d be squeamish but Nutmeg loves live food so much that I can put my squeamish feelings on one side.
7. You don’t care about the smells
Their poo stinks and they produce a lot of it, they require a fair amount of cleaning but they are so cute, you forgive them anything.
8. You’ll become obsessed
Once they’ve captured your heart, you’ll while away hour after hour looking at photos and watching videos, they’re just too darn cute.
